Role summary
This is a Specialist Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist role split between Special schools and Secondary schools therapy teams. The post holder will undertake specialist assessments, formulate treatment plans, and work autonomously with children who may have complex presentations. They will collaborate closely with teaching staff, parents/carers, and other multidisciplinary team members. The role also involves supervising junior staff and students, and contributing to service development and evaluation.
Essential criteria
- Relevant specialist experience post qualification e.g. ASD population
- Experience of working with children with special needs in an educational or multidisciplinary setting (e.g. clinic)
- Experience completing assessments and developing intervention plans
Desirable criteria
- Student supervision / clinical education
- Experience supervising junior staff e.g. therapy assistants, NQT
- Teaching experience of in-service programs
- Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language therapy
- HCPC registration
- Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses
- Registered Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
- Knowledge and skills
- Well established knowledge of a range of standardised and functional assessment tools relevant to the client group
- A working knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to the client group
- Knowledge of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group
- Knowledge of a wide range of appropriate Augmentative and Alternative Communication aids for this client group
- Understanding the roles of other professional relevant to the client group
- Sound knowledge of standards of record keeping
- Established analytical and reflection skills
- Effective communication, monitoring, analysis and adaptation of interactions and responses within the assessment and therapeutic process
- Understand the impact of communication breakdown on the client's emotional wellbeing, mental health, functional ability, life chances and family dynamics, social and educational inclusion
- Knowledge of curriculums appropriate to the client group
- Working knowledge of the normal and abnormal swallow
- Knowledge of the National Curriculum across all Key Stages

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a split post between our Special schools and Secondary schools therapy teams. Both teams are part of the wider Children's therapies team, a supportive and dynamic team with many professional development opportunities.
This post offers a unique opportunity to develop a wide repertoire of clinical skills.

- Experience of, and specialist skills working with, a diverse paediatric caseload
- Experience in developing and delivering universal and / or targeted level offers, preferably within special schools and/or mainstream schools

- Ability to work flexibly and independently where necessary
- Enthusiasm, imagination, and initiative
The role will encompass supervision and and support of junior speech and language therapists as well as speech and language therapy assistants. The post holder will also support the development and evaluation of service delivery.
