Role summary
This role involves leading the nursing team in the Emergency Department, coordinating patient care, and supporting patient flow. The Senior Sister/Charge Nurse will ensure high standards of evidence-based and compassionate care through clinical leadership and effective management. They will also contribute to the department's development using innovation and evidence-based practices. The post holder must understand and promote safe and effective patient flow.
Key responsibilities
- Provide senior clinical oversight across all ED areas, leading assessment, prioritisation and escalation of unwell or deteriorating patients.
- Coordinate daily ED operations, ensuring safe staffing, appropriate skill mix and effective allocation.
- Provide leadership, supervision and support to Band 6s and junior nurses, managing appraisals, sickness, performance and staff wellbeing.
- Ensure compliance with NMC standards, Trust policies and regulatory requirements, leading incident management and quality improvement.
- Represent nursing within the ED, contributing to strategic planning and service improvement, and championing patient experience and safety.
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (Adult or Child) with current NMC registration.
- Evidence of post-registration study relevant to emergency care.
- Recognised Leadership or management course completion
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Advances Paediatric Life Support (APLS)
- Teaching and Assessing (998 / SLIP / FLIP/ PEEP)
- Completion of Level 1 & 2 RCN National Curriculum & Competency Framework
- Significant experience working in Urgent or Emergency care at Band 6 level or above.
- Possesses extensive clinical experience, evidencing a high level of professional competence and expert practice.
- Strong understanding of ED pathways, including triage, streaming, paediatrics, UTC, and SDEC.
- Skilled in de-escalation, conflict resolution, and supporting staff during challenging situations.
- Knowledge of current clinical or professional issues
- Understanding of Clinical Audit and Governance
- Experience leading teams in a clinical environment.
- Experience in staff management including managing sickness, performance, appraisals, and supporting staff wellbeing.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead multidisciplinary coordination.
- Experience contributing to audits, quality improvement, and service development.
Desirable criteria
- MSc degree relevant to urgent and emergency care/ Evidence of CPD
- Completion of Faculty of Emergency Nursing Modules
- Complete ED clinical skills set- (see person specification)
- Experience in patient complaints/ patient safety incident Management
- Demonstrates strong leadership in coordinating operational escalation and implementing escalation pathways during periods of increased pressure.
- Demonstrates experience of service improvement / transformational change
- Experience with Budget management & control

Job summary
The post holder will be responsible for leading the unit nursing team on a day to day basis; coordinatingthe delivery of holistic patient care within the clinical environment, whilst supporting flow in terms ofadmissions, transfers and discharges to multiple points of contact.
Through clinical leadership, adherence of the Trust Right Care values and the utilisation of effectivemanagement skills, the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse will ensure the department team is informed,trained and developed to enable the highest standards of evidence based and compassionate care tobe delivered to our patients, their carers and families. They will support a collaborative, open andtrusting communication style to all groups that the Unit communicates or interacts with from staff, tovisiting teams and the individuals we care for.
To actively participate in the development of the Emergency Department using innovation, challengeand evidence based practice/strategies to support forward growth, progression and value based care.
The post holder must understand the core concepts of safe and effective patient flow through theDepartment and beyond the acute hospital, using their skills to promote and support themultidisciplinary team.
