Role summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and dedicated nurse to join Ward 1, a 34-bedded Acute and Short Stay Medical Ward, as a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse. You will support the Ward Manager in maintaining high standards of clinical care, patient safety, and ward leadership, providing visible leadership and coordinating the clinical area. The role involves working closely with the senior team, supporting staff development, and deputising for the Ward Manager when required. This part-time position (28 hours per week) is to cover maternity leave and includes day, night, weekend, and bank holiday working.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist the Ward Manager in the smooth and effective coordination and management of the Ward.
  • Act as the Ward Manager's deputy in ensuring all aspects of service delivery are effective and efficient.
  • Act as a visible clinical leader, supporting junior colleagues in the delivery of high-quality care.
  • Be an active senior member of the ward MDT.
  • Take charge of shifts and use analytical skills to problem solve.
  • Participate in the non-clinical aspects of Ward Management, supporting the Senior Charge Nurse with complaints, sickness management, governance, and audits.

Essential criteria

  • Registered Adult/Child Nurse on the NMC register
  • Substantial post registration experience working in a complex health care setting / Acute NHS care setting supervising / mentoring junior staff
  • Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
  • Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
  • Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff
  • Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
  • Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department
  • Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice.
