Role summary
This role is for an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join the Older Peoples Assessment and Liaison (OPAL) and Integrated Assessment Team (IAT) at Wythenshawe Hospital. The service provides specialist frailty and acute medicine therapy across urgent care settings, including the Emergency Department and Acute Frailty Units. The post holder will deliver high-quality care, focusing on early assessment and management to prevent hospital admissions and support early discharge for older patients and those with frailty. It involves working in a fast-paced environment as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver a comprehensive therapy service to patients in the urgent care setting, with particular knowledge and skills in the management of frailty and medicine.
- Perform advanced therapeutic assessment of patients with diverse and complex presentations.
- Organise and manage your own caseload to meet service need and patient priorities.
- Support, appraise, and educate more junior staff, therapy technicians, and students.
- Participate in a 7-day rota, inclusive of weekends and bank holidays, between 8am and 6pm, with progression to extended service hours until 8pm.
- Maintain professional standards of practice and codes of conduct for yourself and supervised staff.
Essential criteria
- Recognised BSC Honours degree in Occupational Therapy
- State registration via Health and Care Professions Council
- Postgraduate clinical experience as a junior in a broad rotational post
- Specialist knowledge of Occupational therapy assessment and treatment technique relevant to post role
- Working knowledge of local and national policies and procedures e.g. manual handling, COT/HCPC code of conduct and standards of practice, Health and Safety, Infection Control, CPR, Equality and Diversity
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Experience of and commitment to interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary team working
- Experience of supervision of students and assistants
- Evidence of contribution to clinical education and in-service training of less experienced staff/students and assistants
Desirable criteria
- Involvement in relevant specialist interest group
- Registered member of the British Association of Occupational Therapy
- Previous experience at this level
- Evidence of participation in research
- To have attended a clinical educators course
- Experience working in the community setting
- Experience working with frailty and ageing medicine

We provide a Specialist Frailty and Acute Medicine therapy service here at Wythenshawe Hospital. We are excited to be advertising for a full time Occupational Therapist. Our OPAL/IAT therapy service aims to deliver high quality care to our patients across the Emergency Department, Clinical Decisions Unit and our Acute Frailty and Acute Medical Units. We are presently working to develop our Frailty SDEC services and working closely with our community colleagues across the hospital at home and urgent response services. Our aim is continually toimprove outcomes for our older population, and those living with frailty through proactive early assessment and management of complex co-morbidities, preventing avoidable hospital admissions, supporting early discharge and accessing appropriate community services. In addition, we provide services for adults with a variety of clinical conditions presenting to these clinical areas.
