Role summary

This role is for an Enhanced Practice Sonographer to join the Ultrasound Department at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. The successful candidate will independently perform and report ultrasound examinations across General Medical, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology, including paediatrics and early pregnancy care. They will also play a key role in training student Sonographers. A PGDip in Medical Ultrasound is required, and a 10% recruitment and retention premium applies to the salary.

Essential criteria

  • DCR or Degree in Radiography
  • Up to date CPD file
  • CASE Accredited Post graduate Diploma in ultrasound covering modules of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (to include EPC) .
  • Evidence of training experience for award of post graduate diploma in ultrasound
  • NT accreditation
  • Post qualification independent NHS practice experience
  • Be able to care and show empathy to all patients.
  • Deal sensitively with patients from all cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to pass on knowledge to others in a clear and concise way
  • To competently undertake full range of ultrasound examinations in Obstetrics, Gynae and General Medical.
  • Proven computer skills
  • Dexterity, coordination and sensory skills
  • Legible handwriting
  • To assume correct scanning position in order to minimise RSI, neck and back injuries

Desirable criteria

  • Post Gard Diploma in Ultrasound to include Abdominal Ultrasound Module
  • MSC in Ultrasound
  • HCPC (or other Professional body) registration
  • Trainee mentoring experience
  • ECDL

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sonographer to join the expanding Ultrasound Department at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. Applicants must hold a PGDip in Medical Ultrasound and be competent in core ultrasound services including General Medical (including paediatrics), Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Candidates practising solely in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Care (EPC) are also encouraged to apply. Current Trainee Sonographers awaiting results for 2026 will also be considered but offer will be subject to successful course completion - PGDip in Medical Ultrasound and evidence of ratified results.

A 10% recruitment and retention premia applies to this post and will be added to the advertised salary.

Part-time candidates interested in evening and weekend work may also be considered.

The L&D Ultrasound Service comprises General Imaging and the Women's Health Unit, supported by a friendly team of qualified and trainee sonographers. The department actively promotes continuing professional development (CPD), with regular participation in clinical governance and audit activities.
