Role summary
This role is for a highly specialist cardiac physiologist (echocardiographer) to join an expanding department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will perform and report transthoracic echocardiograms, contribute to specialist echo areas like stress echo or TOE, and participate in non-clinical projects. They will also be expected to motivate, develop, and lead a small team, provide specialist training, and contribute to service development. BSE accreditation or an equivalent qualification is essential for this position.
Key responsibilities
- Perform transthoracic echocardiograms to a high standard and produce accurate, comprehensive reports.
- Perform specialist echocardiograms (e.g., transoesophageal, stress, 3D, contrast/bubble, complex dyssynchrony, complex adult congenital studies) depending on experience and training.
- Assist in protocol development and maintenance for echocardiography standards.
- Train physiologists, cardiology registrars, and other medical professionals to BSE individual accreditation standard.
- Manage own workload, contribute to the echo department rota, and monitor inpatient waiting lists.
- Lead a small team within a specialist area and represent it at departmental meetings.
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable practical experience of performing & reporting of echocardiograms.
- Knowledge and practical experience of at least one specialist area of echo e.g. 3D, bubbles, stress or TOE.
- Broad knowledge of echocardiography and multi vendor echo machines
- Experience in applying theoretical knowledge into patient care
- Good communication skills
- Able to deliver teaching and training on complex investigations to other professional groups
- Relevant BSc degree or BHF training.
- BSE or European accreditation
- ILS certification.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in leading a small project within your team e.g QA, audit or service review.
- Previous experience of clinical or academic teaching
- Cannulation
- Evidence of post graduate study in clinical or management area
- HCPC registration as a clinical scientist
- Accreditation in TOE, ACHD or stress echo

Opportunities for continuing professional development are excellent and studying for postgraduate qualifications is encouraged. Health Education England have commissioned five HSST (Higher Specialist Scientific Training) posts in Cardiac Science here at GSTT in recent years.
