Role summary
This role is for an Assistant Ophthalmic Science Practitioner within the Ophthalmic Imaging and Angiography department at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. The post holder will help provide comprehensive ophthalmic physiological sciences services to patients of all ages. They will be trained to perform various diagnostic tests and procedures, working collaboratively within a large and dynamic imaging team. This is an opportunity to learn new skills in a supportive environment, contributing to the smooth running of the service.
Key responsibilities
- Work collaboratively to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Ophthalmic Physiological Sciences Service.
- Be trained to carry out diagnostic tests including Optical Coherence Tomography, Ultra-wide field imaging, and Humphrey Visual Fields.
- Perform iCare Tonometry, Visual Acuity testing, and drop instillation.
- Undertake patient history taking, note taking, and data inputting.
- Contribute to improving and expanding the range and standards of diagnostic tests provided.
- Work closely with Medical Retina, Uveitis, and Glaucoma specialties.
Essential criteria
- GCSE's (or equivalent) A-C (or equivalent grade) in Maths, English and Science, or equivalent experience
- 2 A-levels (or equivalent qualification) or equivalent experience
- Excellent Computer skills and proficiency
- Knowledge of the Microsoft Office Applications
- A desire to undertake further qualifications, and training
- Excellent Interpersonal Skills
- Adaptable
- Ability to work under pressure and unsupervised
- Excellent Interpersonal and communication skills
- Proven history of working within a team and dealing with the public
- Experience working with computers, data handling and interpretation of results
- Ability to work within a team and as an individual whenever necessary
- Motivated Uses initiative

- Degree level educated (preferable science based)
- Ophthalmic based qualifications (IOVS, GREG Courses etc..)
- IT Qualifications (city and guilds, ECDL)
