Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist to join the Blood Transfusion team at York Hospital. The role involves taking delegated responsibility for day-to-day operational matters, supervising and training staff, and ensuring compliance with MHRA and UKAS accreditation. The successful candidate will work 15 hours per week, primarily on Thursdays and Fridays, with potential for pro rata participation in evening and weekend shifts.
Key responsibilities
- Take delegated responsibility for day-to-day operational matters of the Blood Transfusion section.
- Deputise for the Chief Biomedical Scientist on technical matters in their absence.
- Supervise, train, and develop subordinate staff, including BMS, Trainee BMS, Associate Practitioners, and MLAs.
- Ensure proficiency, competence, and personal/professional standards of staff are maintained.
- Work closely with senior BMS colleagues to ensure harmonisation of procedures and policies.
- Ensure MHRA compliance and UKAS accreditation is maintained.
Essential criteria
- MSc or Equivalent in relevant speciality
- Comprehensive experience and a minimum of 3 years' experience in a specialist BMS position within the relevant discipline in an UKAS accredited laboratory
- Excellent working knowledge of UKAS and MHRA
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Teaching, training and development of staff to MSc level.

Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Blood Transfusion team as a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist at the York hospital site as part of the Scarborough, Hull, York Pathology Services (SHYPS) Network.
You must be a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registered Biomedical Scientist and hold an appropriate post graduate qualification that includes Blood Transfusion speciality (MSc or HSD). Experience of quality management, audit and leadership experience would be advantageous.
The Blood Transfusion Laboratory is equipped with Grifols Gel Column Technology, has two Erytra analysers and a DG Reader for manual card reading and utilises Haemonetics blood tracking.
This position is 15 hours per week and the successful candidate should be available to work Thursday and Fridays with possible pro rata participation in a partial shift which includes some evening and weekends.
