Role summary
This role involves supporting men with serious mental health conditions at Lee Mill Low Secure Unit by planning and delivering tailored exercise, sport, and physical health activities. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote healthier lifestyles, improve wellbeing, and aid patients in their recovery and community reintegration. The practitioner will manage their own caseload, maintain resources, and contribute to developing the role of engagement, activity, and physical therapies on the ward.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and provide flexible, client-centred exercise/sports activities and interventions for patients.
- Contribute to the individualised assessment and treatment of patients, setting realistic goals and providing feedback.
- Manage a caseload of patients within your sphere of knowledge and skill, seeking advice when necessary.
- Maintain sports and exercise resources on the wards, including ordering equipment and ensuring safe use.
- Develop and embed the role of engagement, activity, and physical therapies practitioner onto the ward.
- Promote health education on a 1:1 and group basis (e.g., smoking cessation, sleep hygiene).
Essential criteria
- Running group sessions
- Ability to adapt communication style to meet the needs of varying groups of people
- An understanding of a holistic approach to mental health care
- Ability to maintain accurate, contemporaneous records of sessions delivered
- Good listening and observation skills
- Organisational skills

- Awareness of mental health conditions
- Recognised qualification in sports and fitness instruction at Level 3 Diploma minimum, including assessment of a persons ability to exercise
- Experience of working with people to facilitate functional skills, re-gain independence and promote health and wellbeing
- Good levels of computer literacy
- Enthusiasm about role of exercise in wellbeing
- Awareness and acceptance of cultural diversity
- Ability to frequently travel independently and in a timely manner between Livewell Southwest sites and community locations including areas not served by public transport.

Desirable criteria
- Diploma in anatomy, physiology and massage, or willingness to train
- Member of the Register of Exercise Professionals
- Experience of working with people who have a mental illness
- Experience of working in a hospital setting, with a multi-disciplinary team
