Role summary
This role is for an Orthopaedic Clinical Nurse Specialist based at the Grafton Way Building at UCLH, working 22.5 hours per week on a 12-month fixed-term contract. You will provide specialist care for patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery, ensuring a seamless transition of care between UCLH and Whittington Hospital. The role involves supporting patients through pre-operative education, inpatient review, and post-discharge follow-up, including running virtual clinics and interpreting patient data. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient experience and care.
Key responsibilities
- Follow a patient's journey from beginning to end, supporting the pre-operation process through patient education and Surgical School.
- Review inpatients and participate in daily ward rounds, as well as conducting telephone follow-up clinics for discharged patients.
- Help run the Virtual Arthroplasty Clinic (VAR), reviewing x-rays and interpreting Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) data.
- Contribute to the multidisciplinary preoperative preparation of patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery.
- Liaise with the surgical team, clinic staff, and admissions services to facilitate and improve the pre-admission process.
- Provide clinical support and facilitate the patient journey whilst an inpatient, liaising with MDT members for treatment and inpatient stay.
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse Part 1, 2 or relevant section of the register
- Teaching course
- Relevant clinical course
- Degree (Level 3/ FHEQ Level 6)
- Extensive relevant clinical and managerial experience in a senior position
- Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and in electronic formats
- Demonstrates evidence of professional development in line with KSF, maintains updated Portfolio.
- Evidence of working as receptor/facilitator/mentor
- Reflective in Practice
- Experience in leading others and responding to learning needs.
- Articulates reasons for desire to work in these clinical areas.
- Able to manage a team including developing potential and performance management.

- Recognised Leadership course.
- NVQ assessor
- Experience of report writing
- Has led on Practice development initiatives

UCLH (University College London Hospitals) Foundation Trust and Whittington Health NHS Trust work in partnership to provide elective orthopaedic services within North Central London (NCL). In 2021, the Trusts collaborated to create the Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Grafton Way.
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) you will be based at the Grafton Way Building (GWB) at UCLH and assist in providing specialist care for patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery with the aim of ensuring a seamless transition of care between UCLH and the Whittington Hospital.
