Role summary
This role is for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work with babies, children, and young people across special schools and early years settings. The post holder will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and management for children with communication and swallowing difficulties. They will work collaboratively with families, education staff, and multidisciplinary teams, contributing to service development and supporting junior staff.
Key responsibilities
- Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and management for children with speech, language, communication, and swallowing difficulties.
- Work across special schools, specialist provisions, and early years settings, managing a caseload including children with developmental, medical, and complex learning needs.
- Collaborate with parents, carers, education staff, and other professionals to support communication development.
- Contribute to the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) process, including statutory requests and Individual Development Plans.
- Participate in service development, waiting list initiatives, and clinical audit activities.
- Support the supervision and development of Band 5 Speech and Language Therapists, Healthcare Support Workers, and students.
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of evidence-based treatment for complex communication needs
- Knowledge of the principles of person-centred practice
- Experience of a school-aged caseload, including complex communication needs
- Experience of collaborative working with additional learning needs, education staff/settings
- Experience of working closely with families
- Experience of providing clinical support for others, including SLTs and students)
- Experience of an early years caseload
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of ALNET Act (2018)
- Knowledge of coaching, training approaches to support families, education staff and wider professionals.
- Experience of delivering SLT service in schools
- Experience of providing training to others
- Experience of working in multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of delivering SLT service in community clinics
- Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- Relevant post-graduate CPD and/or courses

Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speech and Language Therapist to join our Babies, Children, and Young People (BCYP) Speech and Language Therapy Service, working across both our Special Schools Team and Early Years Team.
The post holder will hold a degree qualification in Speech and Language Therapy and be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). They will have significant post-registration experience and will work as an autonomous practitioner.
The primary purpose of the role is to provide a specialist speech and language therapy service for children with speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties across our special schools, specialist provisions for children with complex needs, and early years settings. Working collaboratively across both the Special Schools and Early Years Teams, the post holder will be responsible for assessment, intervention, advice and support to children, families and the wider multidisciplinary team.
In addition, the post holder may be required to provide assessment and management for children with a broad range of paediatric conditions within other areas of the BCYP Speech and Language Therapy Service, either as part of their regular caseload or on a rotational b
