Role summary
This role is for a highly motivated Advanced Clinical Practitioner to join the General Surgery team. The ACP will provide expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management for patients with surgical conditions, primarily in the Same Day Emergency Care unit. Responsibilities include advanced clinical decision-making, leadership, education, and service development. Applicants must hold or be undertaking an ACP masters qualification.
Key responsibilities
- Provide expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with surgical conditions.
- Work mainly in the Same Day Emergency Care unit (SDEC) assessing general surgery and urology patients.
- Order clinical investigations, interpret results, and manage patient episodes of care, including independent discharge or collaboration with the surgical team.
- See surgically referred patients in the Emergency Department and manage surgical SDEC virtual clinics.
- Occasionally support general surgery ward rounds.
- Dedicate weekly time to develop in all four pillars of advanced practice.
Essential criteria
- Degree-level professional qualification in nursing or AHP
- NMC/HCPC Registered
- MSc Advanced Practice/Clinical Masters
- Non-Medical Prescriber (V300 Extended Formulary and Supplementary Nurse Prescribing Programme)
- IRMER - trained
- Continuous Professional Development portfolio
- Relevant clinical skills to support clinical practice
- Knowledge of advanced clinical, psychological, and social needs of patients attending urgent /acute care.
- Excellent clinical reasoning /clinical decision making
- Demonstrates highly developed specialist knowledge and expertise across a wide range of emergency care procedures
- Demonstrable experience of complex decision making
- Good knowledge of national and local targets, NICE Guidelines and policies applicable to urgent care and general surgery
- Relevant previous experience of working at an advanced clinical level.
- Evidence of recent research and audit.
- Evidence of change management and/or innovative practice
- Experience of working in a general surgery environment
- Experience of multi professional working
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education
- Recognised teaching/assessing qualification 998/997/mentorship
- Trained in Advanced Life Support (Adult)
- Basic surgical skills course
- Experience of leading patient involvement/patient feedback
- Experience in delivery of nurse led services
- Leadership and management experience
