Role summary
This role is for a motivated Band 5 NMC registered nurse to join a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) team. The unit provides high-quality, family-centred care to neonates from 32 weeks gestation, including HDU, Special Care, and Transitional Care cots. The nurse will provide compassionate care, assess and implement individualised care plans, monitor infants' conditions, and support families. Essential criteria
- First Level Qualification - RN (Child), RSCN, RN (Adult), RGN, RM
- Current registration with NMC
- Clinical and Practical Nursing Skills
- An awareness of evidence based practice within the clinical setting
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development
Desirable criteria
- Degree in Nursing
- Special & Intensive/High Dependency Care Neonatal Modules
- NLS Provider qualification
- Recent Neonatal experience in either a Level 1, 2 or 3 Neonatal Unit
- Enhanced Clinical Practice Skills, IV compe
- Cannulation and Venepuncture skills
- Experience of teaching and mentorship
- Specific Skills
- An understanding of customer care in the clinical setting
- Ability to work within a technical environment
- Understanding of the principles of family Integrated care
- Competent in numeracy and literacy
- Works within sphere of responsibilities and acknowledges limitations
- Good communication and diplomacy skills, organisational and interpersonal skills

Our Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) is a busy, friendly Level 1 neonatal unit providing high-quality, family-centred care to babies and their families at the very start of their neonatal journey. The unit comprises 10 cots, including:
- 2 HDU cots
- 4 Special Care cots
- A newly established 4-bedded Transitional Care unit
We care for babies from 32 weeks gestation, provide stabilisation for more premature or critically unwell term neonates, and work closely with the Peninsula Neonatal Transport Team. As part of the Southwest Neonatal Network, we offer excellent exposure to wider neonatal pathways and best practice.
Main duties of the job
- Provide safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care to neonates requiringspecial care, high dependency, or intensive care.
- Undertake comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualised care plans in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
