Role summary
This is a development post for a registered adult nurse in Sexual Health & HIV Services. The role involves following an individual training programme to progress from a Band 5 Staff Nurse to a Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse. The post holder will deliver high-standard integrated sexual health care, including nurse-led clinics, and build knowledge in patient groups and competencies. The training program includes various clinical skills and assessments, with the timeframe dependent on prior skills and achievement of competencies.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain a high standard of nursing care and service provision for STIs and HIV/BBVs.
- Inform, advise, teach, and counsel clients on contraception, including performing Implanon insertion and removal.
- Obtain clear and thorough relevant histories from patients and examine them to obtain appropriate clinical specimens.
- Manage a range of symptomatic and asymptomatic female and male cases, including discharge, genital ulceration, and genital warts.
- Manage patients attending for PrEP, PEPSE, or PEP according to local guidelines and initiate Cryotherapy according to protocol.
- Treat patients within the confines of patient group directions (PGDs), arrange prescriptions, and safely administer and supply treatments.
Essential criteria
- RGN (NMC Sub-part 1 Adult branch)
- Post registration experience
- Excellent communication skills (written & verbal)
- Must have an active interest in this speciality and client group and be motivated to learn about sexual health and contraception
- IT skills - conversant with windows environment.
- Willingness to undertake all aspects of the development training programme to progress to Band 6
- Must have the motivation and ability to work with both male and female client groups.
- The ability to discuss matters of sex and sexuality.
- The ability to approach clients as a whole.
- The ability to work as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
- Flexible and adaptable to his/her role/work.
Desirable criteria
- Univeristy cert or eqiv in sexual health training
- DFRSH or eqiv university cert in contaception/reproductive health
- Previous experience in Sexual Health
- Previous experience in Contraception

- IT skills - word processing (MS word)
- IT skills - presentations (MS powerpoint)
- IT skills - Spreadsheets (MS excel)
