Role summary

This role is for a Diagnostic Radiological Physicist within the Radiological Sciences Unit. It involves supporting senior physicists in diagnostic radiology and radiation safety, with opportunities for learning and skill development. Essential criteria

  • Honours degree in a relevant subject
  • MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or ability to achieve this within a reasonable timescale

Desirable criteria

  • Successful completion of Scientist Training Programme in Medical Physics, or equivalent
  • Relevant experience in radiation safety applied to use of ionising radiation in medicine and of diagnostic radiology physics
  • Experience in DR quality assurance (able to test a wide range of diagnostic x-ray imaging equipment - simple to mid-range systems independently, more complex systems with supervision
  • Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from radiation exposure and of the image quality requirements for a range of diagnostic imaging procedures
  • Some experience of working in a clinical environment
  • Working towards MPE accreditation
  • In-depth specialist knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines
  • Ability to interpret and apply such relevant guidance and legislation
  • Able to work independently providing specialist advice to the Trust
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (specifically Word & Excel); able to set up databases and spreadsheets and extract information
  • Experience of computer programming e.g. ImageJ
  • Statistical analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of wider clinical issues and their implications

Job summary

We have 2 vacancies for diagnostic radiology (DR) physicists within the Radiological Sciences Unit at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT); one is a 0.4 WTE permanent post due to a resignation and the other is a 1WTE fixed term maternity cover.

Both posts are band 7, aimed at medical physicists who have finished or are about to complete the NHS STP training scheme or equivalent and therefore have some working experience in quality assurance and radiation safety in a clinical environment. This role provides support to senior physicists including those certificated as RPAs and MPEs, whilst building on the experience gained through training. The successful applicants will work in a helpful, friendly and dynamic team, delivering scientific advice and technical support in diagnostic radiology and radiation safety.

The position offers excellent opportunities for learning and developing skills and will broaden your knowledge and understanding across all aspects of Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Safety. Candidates with less experience, holding a BSc in Physics and/or MSc in Medical Physics, who are interested in a career in Medical Physics are encouraged to apply as training and support will be available (subject to an amended job description and salary band 5/6 Annex U).
