Role summary
This role is for an enthusiastic and experienced Band 6 Physiotherapist to join the Specialist Surgery team at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. You will provide inpatient therapy services for regional vascular surgery and other surgical specialties, working with a dynamic team to assess patients and promote recovery. The position requires strong communication and clinical skills, contributing to staff development and participating in a 7-day working rota.
Key responsibilities
- Use therapeutic assessment and clinical reasoning skills to provide a high-quality physiotherapy service on surgical wards.
- Work collaboratively with the surgical multidisciplinary team to deliver patient-centred care.
- Complete all clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner, maintaining associated records.
- Assist with supervision, education, and co-ordination of Band 5 therapists, generic therapy support workers, and students.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of the specialist surgery therapy service.
- Participate in the 7-day working rota with the specialist surgery team and the respiratory physiotherapy on-call rota.
Essential criteria
- Diploma / degree in Physiotherapy.
- Registered with Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC).
- A levels or equivalent qualification.
- Good standard of general education including GCSE Maths and English grade C and above.
- Evidence of CPD including recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality.
- Demonstrates clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients within this speciality / within the NHS with experience of elderly and frail elderly, respiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
- Experience of working on a physiotherapy on-call service.
- Experience of working with student physiotherapists and assistants.
- An ability to analyse clinical and non clinical complex facts and situations, which require the interpretation and comparison of a range of options.
- An ability to plan, organise, formulate and adjust complex plans.
- An ability to supervise and delegate work to physiotherapists, assistants and students.
Desirable criteria
- Member of specialist interest group.
- Attendance at Clinical Educators course.
- It is desirable that the candidate will have had some experience within speciality area.

Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced band 5, or band 6, physiotherapist to work in the Specialist Surgery team at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. The team provides inpatient therapy services for the regional vascular surgery unit and a variety of other surgical specialties, including GI, ENT and urology.
You will join our dynamic team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy support workers to provide specialist assessment and holistic therapy across the surgical wards. Working with the multi-disciplinary team to promote recovery, and maximise independence, for patients following surgery or illness.
The role requires experience of working in an appropriate surgical specialty within an acute hospital setting, as well as excellent communication, organisation and clinical skills.
