Role summary

This is an excellent opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join a diverse team delivering high-quality nursing care to patients in a prison setting. You will assist registered nurses in providing physical care, including taking observations, ECGs, and wound care, as well as engaging patients in holistic, needs-led care. The role involves promoting health and well-being through health promotion activities and contributing to risk assessment and care planning. You will work within an integrated healthcare delivery model, focusing on mental health, physical health, pharmacy, and clinical substance misuse.

Key responsibilities

  • Respond to the needs of patients in an honest, non-judgemental, and open manner.
  • Actively engage with patients in the provision of holistic, needs-led care.
  • Deliver health promotion activities and programmes in support of a registered healthcare professional.
  • Assist patients to attain optimal physical health and with physical procedures alongside a registered healthcare professional.
  • Contribute appropriately to risk assessment and individualised care planning.
  • Work as directed by a registered nurse, providing physical care to patients according to a written care plan, including carrying out ECGs, phlebotomy, basic wound care, NEWS2, and blood glucose monitoring.

Essential criteria

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience
  • Previous care/HCA experience
  • Experience of working in a primary care setting - hospital, secure units/prisons, etc
  • Competent at taking blood pressure, ECGs and other observations
  • Ability to assess risk and care plans effectively
  • Good communication skills (written & verbal)

Desirable criteria

  • Wound care experience/knowledge
