Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic neonatal nurse to lead the team at Wexham Park Neonatal unit. The role involves working closely with the neonatal Matron and practice development team to support staff in delivering the highest standard of neonatal care. The unit is a Local Neonatal Unit with 2 Intensive Care, 3 High Dependency, and 12 Special Care cots, caring for babies over 27 weeks gestation and stabilising others for transfer. The team aims to provide high quality, evidence-based clinical, developmental, and family-integrated care for the best outcomes for babies and families.
Key responsibilities
- Provide strong visible leadership to all staff within the department and across the organisation, ensuring nursing practice is up to date, evidence based and cost effective.
- Develop the neonatal team, individuals and self to enhance performance, ensuring staff training needs meet organisational objectives through appraisal and knowledge and skills framework.
- Be responsible for own professional registration and ensure all nurses in the neonatal unit have valid NMC registration and practise in accordance with the NMC code, standards of conduct and Trust policy.
- Provide leadership for the implementation of quality initiatives, fostering a strong team focus on high quality, clinically effective healthcare.
- Create and maintain a strong culture of Infection Prevention & Control awareness & practice and ensure compliance with systems to measure standards, share good practice and develop action plans.
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience in working in neonatal service.
- Act as an advocate for the babies, parents and their families and staff.
- Relevant post registration experience of which some must be at Band 6 or above.
- Demonstrate an understanding of local, regional and national neonatal developments and current strategies
- Registered Nurse/Midwife
- Degree in Nursing or other relevant field or can demonstrate experience of working to this level.
- Qualified in Speciality
- Leadership course, module, or qualification
- Evidence of continuing education & professional development
- Able to prioritise and meet deadlines, working in an organised way with excellent time management skills.
- Proven teaching and assessing skills.
- Effective negotiation skills.
- Evidence of strong and effective leadership skills.
- Able to travel between sites and attend Trust and regional meetings off site
Desirable criteria
- NLS
- Management course or qualification.
- Working towards or holds master's degree
- IT Literate
- Demonstrates an understanding of a balanced budget
- Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of research
