Role summary
This is a Mental Health Practitioner role within the Plymouth Livewell Mental Health Support Teams, focusing on delivering evidence-based early interventions for children and young people in educational settings. The post holder will oversee the workload of Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs), provide clinical supervision, and manage a small caseload. The role involves conducting assessments, facilitating referrals, and liaising with schools as part of a multi-agency approach to mental health support.
Essential criteria
- An understanding of the Mental Health Act/ Mental Health Capacity Act requirements.
- An understanding of child development
- Understanding of child protection and the importance of multi-agency work for children and families in the community
- Understanding of CYP-IAPT principles including the use of evidence based therapies and Routine Outcome Measures
- Substantial experience of managing an extensive and complex caseload and working with children/young people presenting with a range of moderate to complex mental health presentations.
- Providing clinical supervision.
Desirable criteria
- Working within a community mental health setting.
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency environment.
- Participation in user involvement in services.
- Experience of delivering model based psychological therapy.
- Mentoring students in line with professional requirements.
- Experience working within Early Intervention and Prevention Services.
- Experience delivery training to a diverse audience.
- Experience presenting to a large and diverse audience.
- A professional mental health qualification and registration e.g. RMN, Social Work Degree or equivalent, BSc/Diploma in OT etc.
- This post requires post grade certificated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with study to a degree.
- Training to level 2 in Safeguarding Adults and level 3 in Children and Young People: roles and competencies for Health Care staff.
- Communication Skills
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to engage with children/young people of all ages experiencing a wide range of mental health presentations.
- Ability to communicate with a wide range of professionals from various settings.
- Able to produce well written reports.
- Able to participate and present information in a group setting.

In 2017, the Government published its Green Paper for Transforming children & young peoples mental health, which detailed proposals for expanding access to mental health care for children and young people, building on the national NHS transformation programme which was already underway
The proposals were focused on providing additional support through schools & colleges and reducing waiting times for treatment. Following a 13-week public consultation, during which the Government received more than 2,700 responses, the Department of Health & Social Care & the Department for Education published its Response to the Children & Young Peoples Mental Health Green Paper Consultation
These core commitments are delivered through a joint & collaborative programme led by the Department of Health & Social Care, Department for Education & NHS England, with support from Health Education England & Public Health England and the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities

- support the senior mental health lead(where established) in each school or college to introduce or develop whole school or college
