Role summary

The Macmillan Information Centre Assistant provides personalised information, practical support, and signposting to people affected by cancer. This role empowers individuals to navigate health and social care services and make informed decisions about their care. The assistant will respond to information and support needs, escalating complex issues to appropriate professionals. They will contribute to a high-quality, person-centred service and supervise volunteers to ensure efficient operation of the centres.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality information, support, and signposting to services for people affected by cancer.
  • Refer individuals to welfare benefits advice services and local initiatives for financial support.
  • Liaise effectively with healthcare professionals and community services for coordinated patient support.
  • Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the Macmillan Information Centre, ensuring a welcoming and accessible service.
  • Supervise, support, and guide volunteers, ensuring appropriate training and deployment.
  • Contribute to the ongoing delivery and development of a Trust-wide cancer information and support service.

Essential criteria

  • Achieved Grade Maths and English (A-C/9-4)
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of the Macmillan Information Centre Assistant role.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work autonomously when required, including lone working, while following Trust procedures.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare or caring environment.
  • Evidence ability to work as a team member with an ability to self motivate and work alone when needed.

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of recent ongoing learning.
  • Able to evidence experience working with cancer patients.
  • Knowledge of Trust clinical and administrative IT systems, including Lorenzo, CITO and V6 Meditech, or equivalent systems.
  • Evidence of dealing with situations under pressure and prioritise time management.

Job summary

Working within an agreed scope of competence, the post holder will respond to information and support needs, recognising and escalating complex issues to appropriate professionals where required.

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality, person-centred information and support service, ensuring a welcoming, accessible, and supportive environment for patients, families, carers, and visitors. They will supervise and support volunteers, promoting excellent standards of service delivery and helping to ensure the efficient day-to-day operation of the Macmillan Information Centres at RDH and QHB.
