Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Specialty Manager to join Moorfields Eye Hospital in the Paediatrics, Strabismus and Neuro-ophthalmology departments. The role involves day-to-day operational management of services and line management of the administrative team. The post holder will play a key leadership role in preparing for a new electronic patient record system and relocation to a new centre in 2027. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract.
Key responsibilities
- Operational management of outpatient, admitted and emergency pathways within the services.
- Management of a busy and dynamic administrative department.
- Management of formal HR processes.
- Contribution to service improvement, strategy and financial management.
- Responsible for key deliverables including RTT performance and delivering activity against the annual business plan.
- Staff management within the department within the budgeted financial envelope.
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level or equivalent knowledge, skills and management experience
- Previous operational management experience within the acute sector or similarly complex organisation.
- Knowledge and effective management of ophthalmology pathways and targets
- Proven track record of meeting significant national targets
- Budget management experience, including cost improvement
- Evidence of report writing and presenting skills.
- Experience of staff management, including setting objectives, team and individual appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary issues
- Experience of management of formal HR processes
- Ability to prioritise effectively in the face of competing demands, and work under pressure to strict deadlines and RTT waiting times target
- Strong leadership, negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to motivate and engage individuals and team
- Problem solving skills: able to respond to unexpected issues, provide a first line response

- Knowledge and experience of service improvement tools and techniques
- Experience of implementing digital solutions
- Proven track record of success in managing change.
- Ability to analyse and interpret data and statistics e.g. activity trends
