Role summary
The Senior Health Care Support Worker (SHCSW) in Neurosurgical theatres assists the multi-disciplinary team in delivering high-standard patient care. This role involves undertaking basic and extended clinical skills with indirect supervision, supporting registered staff, and contributing to resource management. The SHCSW must be IT literate and participate in a rotational night shift pattern for the 24-hour Neuro service.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out a range of clinical duties with minimal/no direct supervision.
- Participate in patient assessment, providing high quality holistic patient care and escalating concerns.
- Lead by example and supervise/support junior members of staff to maintain high standards of care.
- Implement clinical care packages through delegated clinical care duties relevant to the service area.
- Assist in the preparation of the operating theatre, including cleaning designated areas and checking equipment.
- Support completion of patient identification and safety checks, and assist with specimen handling and transportation.
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable experience of providing care in a healthcare or social setting
- Be able to work as a member of a team
- Demonstrable experience of time management and prioritising work
- Understands and committed to a caring approach to patients & relatives
- One of the following - Level 3 (SCQF - 6): - City and Guilds 3 o NVQ 3 in health and social care o BTEC National Diploma in health and social care o
- Demonstrable experience equivalent to the above qualifications

Job summary
The SHCSW within Neurosurgical theatres is a member of the multi-disciplinary team whose function is to assist the team in the delivery of a high standard of patient care. This will involve undertaking basic and extended skills with indirect supervision.
Competent support of registered staff to provide quality patient focused care using extended skills gained from achieving a relevant Level 3 Healthcare NVQ/HCA qualification.
Contribute to resource management. Must be able able to multi task and be IT literate, as you will be using multiple Trust IT systems as part of your role.
The Neuro 24-hour service requires staff to take part in a rotational night shift pattern.
*Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.*
