Role summary
This role involves supporting the development and implementation of Lung Screening Wales, a new national screening programme. The Senior Screening Nurse will initially contribute to service planning and pathway development, then transition to a leadership role in managing the service. Key responsibilities include overseeing risk assessments, referring eligible participants for CT scans, and ensuring high-quality, participant-centred care. The post holder will also be involved in staff training, quality assurance, and continuous service improvement.
Key responsibilities
- Support the planning and delivery of the risk assessment element of the lung cancer screening pathway.
- Provide day-to-day leadership and management of the Risk Assessment Team, supervising Healthcare Support Workers.
- Undertake and oversee clinical review of participant risk assessments and determine eligibility for screening.
- Act as a Non-Medical Referrer, referring eligible participants for Low Dose CT (LDCT) screening.
- Monitor performance against programme standards, identify service improvements, and contribute to reports.
- Deliver education and training programmes for staff, assess competence, and promote professional development.
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council
- Educated to degree level with a relevant qualification
- Post graduate master's qualification or equivalent level of skills and knowledge.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Knowledge and understanding of duty of candour, duty of quality, and clinical governance
- Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and IPC principles
- Experience in leading change, service improvement, and supervising staff
- Experience in delivering sensitive or complex clinical information
- Experience in leading in audit
- Experience of leading and managing a team
- Experience of reviewing incidents and concerns investigations, with the ability to lead investigations and identify learning
- Strong understanding of lung cancer screening, lung cancer, respiratory disease, and population screening principles
- Competent in clinical assessment and interpretation of risk models
- Excellent communication skills, including delivering difficult news
- Ability to work autonomously and manage a varied clinical caseload
- Confident in using IT packages
- Ability to travel between sites in a timely manner to meet the needs of the service
- Satisfactory Enhanced DBS clearance including Adults and Children's Barred List check
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of the lung cancer screening pathway.
- Teaching and assessing qualification
- Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IRMER) qualification
- Experience working in Respiratory, oncology, community, or screening programme experience
- Experience working in a service that is delivered remotely e.g. using telephone appointments
- Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.

We are seeking to recruit two Senior Screening Nurses to support the development and implementation of Lung Screening Wales. In theinitialphase, post holders will contribute to service planning and pathway development while providing nursing support across the Screening Division. Working across screening programmes will broaden their understanding of population health and the contribution of screening to improving outcomes, reducing health inequalities, and delivering the Duty of Quality.
As the programme transitions into operational delivery, the successful candidates will assume a pivotal leadership role in the day-to-day management of the service, ensuring the delivery of safe,effectiveand participant-centred care. They will helpmaintainhigh-quality clinical standards and support continuous service improvement.
