Role summary
This role is for a Clinical Technologist to join the Clinical Engineering Department at University Hospitals of Leicester. The successful candidate will be responsible for the repair, calibration, and maintenance of a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment across the hospital sites. This involves scheduled preventative maintenance, servicing, and safety testing, working to high standards within an accredited Quality System. The role requires flexibility to work across multiple hospital sites.
Key responsibilities
- Be a specialist engineer for a range of medical equipment.
- Effectively manage assigned work, including that of more junior staff, to meet service objectives.
- Undertake preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, and repair to a wide range of patient-critical medical equipment.
- Apply suitable fault-finding techniques to diagnose problems and undertake repairs on complex mechanisms.
- Communicate effectively with clinical users to schedule servicing or understand equipment problems.
- Provide specialised technical advice regarding the operation, limitations, and maintenance of medical equipment to staff, patients, and carers.
Essential criteria
- Able to prioritise and manage own work
- Must be able to deal with constantly changing workload and priorities
- Good understanding of the principles of inventory management including Record keeping and database maintenance.
- Capable of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the service.
- Degree in electronic/clinical engineering or equivalent, OR knowledge at equivalent standard gained through relevant experience/training.
- A good knowledge and significant experience of servicing, repairing and calibration of medical equipment
- Must be able to communicate articulately with colleagues, external agencies and possess good customer care skills
- Be able to maintain effective relationships with colleagues and with associates in other disciplines. Able to teach others and communicate effectively
- Able to exercise own initiative/Judgement when dealing with issues within own specialist area of competence. Have the ability to logically solve technical problems,
- Use of fine tools for equipment adjustment/soldering and calibration
- Able to deal with occasional distressing circumstances when working in clinical areas (e.g., when visiting wards and theatre's fault finding on patient connected equipment). Excellent interpersonal skills
- IT literate
- Manage time accordingly to ensure tasks are completed to specified timescales
- Full valid driving licence
- Be willing to learn/attend specialist training courses and have a positive attitude.
- Evidence of ongoing CPD.
Desirable criteria
- Member of Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists.
- Technical Registration with an engineering institute.
- Significant experience of servicing, repairing and calibration of medical equipmen
- Significant experience in the use and operation of a quality management system such as ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485:2012
- Specialist training on the maintenance and repair of a range of medical devices. Information Technology experience
- Detailed fault finding to PCB and component level

Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Technologist to join the Clinical Engineering Department at University Hospitals of Leicester. The role involves repair, calibration, and maintenance to a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment across Leicester University Hospitals.
The post holder will carry out scheduled preventative maintenance, servicing, repair, calibration and safety testing and acceptance testing on a wide range of simple and complex medical equipment and devices, with minimal day to day direction by the line manager. The post holder is required to work to high standards of safety and accountability, maintain accurate and detailed technical records and operate within an accredited Quality System.
The candidate will be required to be flexible and work across the 3 main hospital sites (Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital). There may also be occasions when the candidate will be asked to support other sites that the clinical engineering department are contracted to support across Leicestershire.
