Role summary
This is a full-time permanent position for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Chemistry at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves working in a busy, UKAS accredited laboratory providing 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring services, utilizing advanced analytical equipment. Key responsibilities
- Join a busy, friendly team to support the progressive department.
- Provide high quality, timely and specialised services in Clinical Chemistry.
- Operate and work with equipment such as Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers, Abbott a3600 track, IDS iSYS, Cascadion, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysers.
- Support the departmental shift system, including weekends, after appropriate training.
- Become fully competent in all areas of Biochemistry.
Essential criteria
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement that is ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
- State registration with Health Professions Council (HPC)
- Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HPC guidelines.
- Experience of working in clinical laboratories.
- Experience of laboratory techniques and automation
Desirable criteria
- Working towards completion of post registration specialist competency portfolio.
- Experience of dealing with suppliers, clinical and support staff, the public or customer care.

Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS). The post-holder will be expected to be based at Heartlands Hospital unless service provision is required across site. The department will be looking into taking on a HCPC registered biomedical scientist.
The department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. The Clinical Chemistry department is equipment with Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers and the Abbott a3600 track.
Specialist Chemistry provides a wide range of services to the Trust as well as other Hospital Trusts. Equipment includes IDS iSYS, Cascadion, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysers, with several tests measured including immunosuppressant's and steroids. There are manual methods using radio-immunoassay for alpha-subunits and ELISA for faecal Elastase.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a HCPC registered BMS and becoming fully competent in all areas of Biochemistry.
