Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife to join the Fetal Medicine Unit team as a Preterm Birth Specialist Midwife. The role involves ensuring the preterm birth service is delivered appropriately to women at risk, providing clinical midwifery care, triaging referrals, and counselling patients. You will also support junior staff and act as a resource for colleagues, working clinically as required. This is a secondment until 31st March 2027.
Essential criteria
- Registered Midwife
- First level degree in related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence
- Professional training/learning which demonstrates highly developed professional knowledge / continuing professional development
- SSSA Practice Assessor/ Mentorship qualification
Desirable criteria
- Master's degree or equivalent level of experience in a highly specialised role
- Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)
- Leadership Qualification or experience
- Skills and abilities
- Good time management and ability to prioritise and manage own workload
- Strong evidence of excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills
- Proficient digital skills, including presentations.
- Ability to manage difficult situations effectively
- Ability to produce clear and concise reports.
- Sonography qualification/ working towards
- Knowledge and Experience
- Broad range of clinical midwifery experience acquired through significant practice in a variety of settings.
- Good knowledge of Preterm Birth
- Clinically sound experience and knowledge.
- Awareness of National and local health policy relating to maternity and wider safety ambitions.
- Knowledge of CQC Essential Standard, the Maternity Improvement Scheme (MIS) and Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle V3
- Experience of working in partnership with a multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of risk management and quality assurance
- Must be able to demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trust's Values and Behaviours
- Able to work to deadlines and under pressure.
- Flexible to meet the needs of the service
- Able to act as an effective role model
- Strong sense of commitment to openness, honesty and integrity in undertaking the role.
- Able to demonstrate a commitment and understanding of the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and respect appropriate to their individual needs.

Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife to join our Fetal Medicine Unit team as the Preterm Birth Specialist midwife. Only midwives with 3 years post preceptorship experience will be considered. You must have completed a UK preceptorship.
Main duties of the job
The role requires you to:
- ensure that the preterm birth service is offered and delivered appropriately to the cohort of women/birthing people who are at risk of preterm birth.
Provide clinical midwifery care to women/birthing people at risk of preterm birth. Triage referrals and ensure the allocation of women/birthing persons on to the appropriate care pathways, this may involve autonomous review of some women/birthing people who meet the criteria for review of cervical length images performed and facilitating the appropriate follow up care, including discharge for women/birthing people with measurements within normal limits.
Provide appropriate counselling and able to cope with highly distressing or emotional circumstances e.g. on diagnosis of a high risk of having a preterm labour and birth. Guide and support junior staff in this situation.Support the clinical teams and work clinically as required during periods of increased activity.
