Role summary
This role is for a Specialist Midwife for Diabetes, acting as a key resource for diabetes care during pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. You will provide direct clinical care, educate patients, and contribute to service development within a multidisciplinary team. The position requires a dynamic, motivated midwife enthusiastic about patient care and keen to develop specialist skills.
Essential criteria
- oRegistered Midwife
- oDiploma/Degree in Midwifery or equivalent
- oProfessional portfolio demonstrating evidence of relevant on-going professional development
Desirable criteria
- oAdvanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO)
- oNeonatal Life Support (NLS)
- oRecognised course in Diabetes / CDEP
- oAbility to demonstrate an expert working knowledge of midwifery in all areas of the maternity service
- oEvidence of relevant clinical updating
- oInvolvement with clinical audit and research and awareness of National Pregnancy in Diabetes Audit (NPID)
- oUse of Epic computerised information system
- oGuideline development, review and implementation
- oAware of current research and its impact on evidence based care.
- oConversant with NMC rules governing practice
- oKnowledge of current reports/guidelines relating to Maternity Care and specialist subject in Diabetes
- oUnderstanding of the Governance and risk agenda
- oTo be able to practice in all clinical areas in accordance with the NMC Code and NMC Standards for Midwives
- oWell-developed interpersonal and counselling skills
- oExcellent communications skills
- oAble to demonstrate contribution to changing practice
- oLiaise with the multi-disciplinary team for best outcomes
- oProvide and support learning and education opportunities
- oAble to use Local and National guidelines based on evidence from recognised sources in relation to care of women with diabetes
- oDemonstrate expert knowledge by being visible, accessible and using clinical skills within the workplace.
- oPromote best practice and implement innovations in care
- oDemonstrate commitment to the implementation of evidence based practice
- oManaging women with complex medical needs
- oGuideline development, review and implementation
- oAble to teach both women and staff about all aspects of diabetes in pregnancy
- Additional Requirements
- oThe ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of Safe, Kind, Excellent.
- oAbility to participate in on call rota
- oAbility to work within a multidisciplinary team
- oAbility to travel between the Trust and the community services, as required

Job summary
As a Diabetes Specialist Midwife, you will be a specialist resource in diabetes during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. The role of the Diabetes Specialist Midwife will encompass all aspects of education, research, and evidence-based practice and the post holder will be grounded in direct clinical care provision to women and their families.
As a Diabetes Specialist Midwife, you will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide and co-ordinate high standards of care for women whose maternity pathways are complicated by diabetes. The post holder will actively participate in the development of services to meet the needs of women with diabetes in maternity services, in line with national and local recommendations.
Candidates must be able to attend the interview in person.
