Role summary

This role supports the R&D Office by providing complex research governance advice and services for primary, community, and wider health and care settings. The post holder will have significant expertise in research governance within these areas, ensuring timely set-up and delivery of research studies. They will manage study oversight, provide guidance to researchers, and support performance management of the research portfolio. Key responsibilities

  • Research project set-up and conduct, including assessment of capacity and capability.
  • Generating research governance reports for social care/non-NHS providers.
  • Advising organisations on HR checks and supporting researchers with contracts/access.
  • Advising on regulatory and legal requirements for research across settings.
  • Supporting project costing and securing excess treatment costs.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to support a strong research portfolio.
  • Line and/or project management of junior R&D staff or secondees as required.

Essential criteria

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Current ICH Good Clinical Practice certification
  • Significant experience of the set-up and delivery of clinical research
  • Experience using IRAS for R&D applications
  • Understanding of research common research methodologies and terminology.
  • Knowledge of research governance and legal requirements to ensure safe systems for patients
  • Ability to engage with fast-moving environment with changing guidance and legislation relevant to the conduct of research
  • Ability to contribute to the development and review of relevant policies and SOPs.
  • Ability to apply logic and proportionality to risk assessment and critical review of protocols
  • Able to demonstrate systematic approach, accuracy and attention to detail in keeping records

Desirable criteria

  • Significant experience of R&D in primary care, community and/or residential settings.
  • Experience of commercial clinical research set-up and delivery.
  • Knowledge of EDGE as a local portfolio management system
  • Skills in cost attribution for research in a healthcare setting
  • Understanding of current R&D issues in the NHS

Job summary

This is an important role in supporting the effective and efficient operation of the R&D Office through the timely provision of complex research governance advice and services for primary care, community care and wider health and care settings, and in service of NIHR East of England Research Delivery Network and related contractual obligations. The role-holder will be expected to have significant specialist research governance expertise in at least one of primary care, community or residential settings, and to be able to operate effectively across all three domains.

They will support robust feasibility, timely set-up and delivery of research studies within the nationally agreed benchmarks, ensuring that the portfolio of studies are prioritised in accordance with feasibility, capacity and capability and are set up accordingly, proactively supporting performance management of studies through regular reporting. As a specialist in one or more of the relevant delivery settings, they will provide specialised and complex study oversight and management, also signposting researchers and delivery sites to relevant guidance and support at the appropriate time for both commercial and non-commercial research.
