Role summary
This is a Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist post within the Forensic Healthcare Service, based at the Chichester Centre, a low secure hospital. The role involves managing a delegated caseload, providing assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for clients with complex communication and dysphagia needs. The post-holder will work as a core member of the Allied Health Professionals team and is expected to have or work towards a postgraduate qualification in dysphagia.
Key responsibilities
- Screen new referrals for communication and dysphagia needs.
- Manage a caseload of adults with forensic mental health needs who have complex communication and dysphagia/eating/drinking/swallowing needs.
- Undertake comprehensive, dynamic, and person-centred assessments using evidence-based practice.
- Ensure service users' voices are heard and included in care planning.
- Support service users in co-creating communication and/or dysphagia resources.
- Ensure communication and/or dysphagia resources are understood and practically applied by the whole care team.
Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree or Masters qualification or equivalent
- Health Professions Council - licence to practice
- Registered member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
- Post graduate experience as a Speech & Language Therapist working in mental health, learning disabilities or other relevant area.
- Experience of training other professionals
- Knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group
- Knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to client group).
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance/audit.
- Knowledge of record keeping standards
- Ability to adapt written and verbal communication to suit the needs of people with communication needs. This may include Makaton signing, symbols and pictures etc
- post graduate experience as a Speech & Language Therapist working in multidisciplinary team
- Significant post graduate experience as a Speech & Language Therapist, including managing a caseload including people with complex communication difficulties and dysphagia
- Managing complex caseload independently
- To have worked under the supervision of a clinical specialist.

Main duties of the job
