Role summary
This role involves working as a Band 6 Special School Nurse within a community-based nursing team, delivering specialist nursing care in special school environments across Birmingham. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, providing clinical care, ensuring safeguarding policies are followed, and acting as a role model for junior staff. The nurse will manage a caseload, provide training to health and educational staff, and work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to support children with health needs.
Essential criteria
- Registered Children's Nurse/Registered Learning Disability Nurse
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
Desirable criteria
- A Specialist Public Health or Community Nursing Qualification would be desirable but not essential
- Evidence of multi-disciplinary working.
- Experience of working with children with complex health and social needs.
- Post registration community experience.
- Skills/knowledge
- Demonstrate ability to manage caseload/workload and associated resources.
- Ability to delegate work appropriately.
- Evidence of assessment skills and ability to manage a range of care plans.
- Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of current legislative changes effecting the NHS and Social Services particularly those affecting primary care.
- Ability to teach relatives, clients and staff across relevant areas of self-care and appropriate nursing practice.
- Ability to demonstrate written skills that area relevant, accurate and concise.
- Awareness of the needs of ethnic minority clients/carers.
- Ability to work in a supervisory capacity when required.
- Ability to supervise, support and motivate junior staff
- Ability to demonstare sound knowledge and application of up to date clinical trends and practices including evidence based ones relevant to needs of school population
- Ability to demonstrate individual responsibility in respect of Health & Safety
- Awareness of the needs of ethnic minority clinets/carers
- Ability to demonstrate verbal skills
- Demonstrate knowledge of child protection issues and policies
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of current legislative changes effecting the NHS and Social Care particularly those affecting primary care
- Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge of standard setting and audit processes
- Ability to learn and apply knowledge appropriately.

Would you like an opportunity to join a community based nursing team?
This post will be working across the city-wide special school nursing service implementing and delivering specialist nursing care in a special school environment. The successful candidate will be required to carry out assessments; provide both planned and responsive clinical care and ensure that local safeguarding policies are adhered to.
They will be identified as a role model for the Band 5 Special School Nurses and Enteral Feeding Assistants and will also support education staff and offer advice and support to parents and pupils.
We would welcome applications from enthusiastic committed children's nurses with proven clinical experience who have excellent communication skills and are able to manage their time effectively.
An understanding of the needs of children and young people with disability and/or additional health problems is essential.
This post is for: 2 x Band 6 Special School Nurse( one is for 35 hours and the other is 28 hours per week)
