Role summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) School Nurse to join the Bexley 0-19 service. The role involves being the named School Nurse for specific schools, providing expert information, guidance, and assessments to improve the health of school-aged children. The post holder will also supervise staff nurses and work collaboratively with schools, families, and other agencies to ensure children and young people reach their full potential. This role is key in shaping services and delivering the 5-19 Healthy Child Programme.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop appropriate databases, contribute to reports, and ensure service targets are met.
  • Work in partnership with Health Visiting teams for seamless care and adhere to child safeguarding policies.
  • Develop accurate factual reports, attend case conferences, and meet with identified children regularly.
  • Promote emotional well-being, support children with long-term conditions, and contribute to health improvement in schools.
  • Act as a mentor for students and newly qualified nurses, providing guidance and supervision to skill mix staff.
  • Remain up to date with evidence-based practice and participate in continuing professional development.

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse - Degree or Diploma
  • Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Qualification in School Nursing (BSc or PgDip)
  • Current NMC registration
  • Experience in delivering Asthma / Anaphylaxis / Basic Life Support training
  • Child safeguarding Level 3 training
  • Ability to work with children of all ages
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a multi- agency setting
  • Car driver with use of a car for work purposes - clean UK driving license.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and adapt to changing needs
  • Excellent organisational skills for self and others
  • Presentation skills
  • Computer Literate
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office packages
  • Recent experience of working within a School Nursing team
  • Recent experience of delivering health promotion and its importance in promoting healthy lifestyles
  • Experience of safeguarding children and young people
  • Sound knowledge of current issues and legislation relating to children

An exciting opportunity has arisen for experienced SCPHN school nurses to join the Bexley 0-19 service. We are looking for dynamic, confident and compassionate nurses to join the well-established team within the Bexley borough. The service is approaching a period of exciting change and innovation, and the post holder would have the opportunity to help influence and transform the service offer available to children, young people and their families.

The post-holder will be the named School Nurse for schools within the area. This role will incorporate a supervisory role for staff nurses working within the school nursing service.

The post holder will work as a member of the School Nursing Service and will work with schools, families, and the wider community to improve the health of school-aged children identifying the more vulnerable, and developing clear referral pathways so that all children and young people can reach their full potential.

This will be achieved by delivering the requirements from the service specification. They will work closely with the identified leader in each school providing expert information, guidance, and assess
