Role summary
This role involves managing a caseload of clinical negligence and personal injury claims, including inquests, within the Quality and Safety Directorate. The officer will investigate complex claims, assess risk and liability, and liaise with legal and clinical teams to ensure compliance with legal requirements. A key aspect is identifying learning from claims to improve patient safety and reduce future clinical and financial risk. The position requires providing expert medico-legal advice, contributing to policy development, and supporting training.
Key responsibilities
- Support the Team Manager in the day-to-day management of Clinical Negligence, Personal Injury Claims and Inquests.
- Manage a caseload of Inquests, liaising with the Coroner's Office, drafting witness statements, and working to strict deadlines.
- Prepare staff for giving evidence at Inquests, guide them through the process, and report outcomes to senior staff.
- Provide expert legal advice on medico-legal issues, such as consent, to staff at all levels.
- Ensure lessons from Claims are identified, addressed by senior staff, and escalated when necessary.
- Inform and update the Team Manager on the production of reports for directorates and Claims Panel.
Essential criteria
- Educated to Degree level or equivalent experience
- Current Chartered Legal Executive qualification or equivalent legal qualification.
- Experience of working with complex and sensitive information within a large organisation.
- Specialist in-depth knowledge & experience in the legal speciality of Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Claims.
- Significant experience of managing own caseload.
- Professional credibility.
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form with staff, patients and their families.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate highly complex information in a manner suited to the audience.
- Ability to articulate and escalate important issues in a clear and logical way.

Job summary
Working within the Quality and Safety Directorate, you will support the Team Manager, Claims in the effective management of Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Claims. Managing your own caseload, you will investigate complex claims, assess risk and liability, liaise with legal representatives and clinical teams, and ensure cases are progressed in line with legal requirements and organisational policies.
You will play a key role in identifying learning from claims, promoting a culture of openness and continuous improvement, and ensuring that lessons are shared across services to reduce future clinical and financial risk.
Working closely with clinicians, managers and external partners, you will provide specialist advice, contribute to policy development, support training and education, and help prepare reports for senior leaders and governance forums.
The successful candidate will be highly organised, able to manage competing priorities and complex information, and committed to delivering high standards of patient safety, quality and service improvement. This role is well suited to an experienced legal services, claims, governance or risk professional who can influence change and support the delivery of safe, effective care.
