Role summary

This role involves providing high-quality, patient-focused care within the specialist endocrine nursing service. Key responsibilities

  • Provide an evidence-based specialist Endocrinology and Metabolism nursing service to a cohort of patients.
  • Ensure all patient referrals are dealt with promptly and efficiently.
  • Demonstrate practice skills in holistic assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
  • Manage a cohort of patients and prioritise workload to meet patient and service need.
  • Undertake clinical training and supervision to achieve appropriate competencies relevant to this specialist service.
  • Provide counselling to patients and families within the level of skills and expertise.

Essential criteria

  • Can demonstrate expert nursing knowledge in Endocrinology and/or research nursing with an ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff
  • Awareness of current research related to Endocrinology
  • Knowledge of current evidence-based practice and ability to apply to service and policy development
  • Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the specialty
  • Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC Register
  • Evidence of post registration qualification (e.g. Society for Endocrinology Endocrine Nurse Certificate or PGD in Endocrinology or equivalent post-graduate course in Specialist/Advanced)
  • Recognised mentorship or teaching/assessing course
  • Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
  • Significant years post registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Band 6 or above in Endocrinology or Oncology/Haematology Or Research Nurse Experience
  • Experience of patient service user advocacy role
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to specialty
  • Ability to explain the requirement to balance clinical caseload
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of healthcare professionals, on a variety of complex and sensitive issues which require persuasive and empathetic skill
  • Ability to work autonomously, manage / prioritise own workload, supervise / appraise and asses junior staff
  • Ability to work as a core member of the multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to develop clinical guideline, protocols and management pathways
  • Ability to adapt behaviour to changing circumstances

Job summary

The post-holder will play a key role in ensuring that the Trust provides high quality, patient focused care within the specialist endocrine nursing service; providing expert advice and support to patients, families and health care professionals using best evidence-based practice. The post holder will work independently/autonomously and at times without direct supervision and will be accountable for their own professional actions. The post holder will be expected to demonstrate highly developed and specialist knowledge and skills through innovative practice leading to the development of increasing levels of autonomy.
