Role summary
The Nurse Endoscopist provides a high-quality, autonomous endoscopic service, independently assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. This role involves contributing to service development, clinical governance, education, audit, and quality improvement initiatives. The post holder ensures care is evidence-based, safe, and patient-centered.
Key responsibilities
- Independently perform upper and/or lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures (OGD, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy).
- Obtain informed consent in accordance with Trust policies.
- Undertake comprehensive patient assessment before, during, and after procedures.
- Recognise abnormalities and determine appropriate management plans.
- Request and interpret relevant diagnostic investigations.
- Perform therapeutic procedures within competency and agreed scope of practice.
- Manage clinical complications and emergency situations appropriately.
- Communicate findings and outcomes effectively to patients and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation.
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (Level 1) with current NMC registration.
- JETS Workforce certification or equivalent competency in endoscopy practice.
- Degree in Nursing or equivalent experience.
- Significant post-registration experience in gastroenterology/endoscopy.
- Experience performing diagnostic endoscopic procedures independently.
- Experience in patient assessment and clinical decisionmaking.
- National endoscopy standards and JAG requirements
- Clinical governance and risk management principles.
- Management of endoscopy-related complications.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Committed to continuous improvement and lifelong learning.
Desirable criteria
- Independent Non-Medical Prescribing qualification
