Role summary
This role involves undertaking complex planned and reactive maintenance and repairs to building engineering plant, equipment, and systems to ensure safe operation and compliance. The post holder will diagnose and solve technical issues, lead and deliver repairs and preventative maintenance of mechanical and electrical services, and support other Estates Operatives. It requires a hands-on approach, including participation in an on-call roster for emergency repairs and maintaining stock levels.
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 3 Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Water Regulations or Unvented Cylinders
- Apprenticeship, City & Guilds, BTEC, HNC/HND or able to demonstrate specialist knowledge within this field through practical experience
Desirable criteria
- HNC/HND plus relevant experience to graduate, professional level or recognised equivalent training in Electrical Engineering
- Experience of working in a multi-skilled role across more than one skill set
- Working within the requirements of method statements or permit to work
- Experience of working in an acute hospital environment
- Have working knowledge of electrical distribution and fire alarm systems
- Understand the workings of electrical and mechanical systems in healthcare buildings
- Must have a sound knowledge of the Electricity at Work Regulation 1989
- IPAF/PASMA licence
- IOSH Managing Safely

1.1. The post holder will undertake complex planned and non-routine reactive maintenance work and repairs to maintain the building engineering plant, equipment and systems to a high standard throughout the Trust, in order to ensure safe operation, serviceability and compliance with statutory and Mandatory regulations. This will include support to other Estates Operatives and the Estates Helpdesk.
1.2. Under management direction and in conjunction with the Estates Officers plan, lead and deliver the repair and Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) of mechanical and electrical services.
1.3. The post is a "hands-on" position and the post holder will possess the skills to carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks as part of the role in leading, supporting and training the team and its designated activities to ensure compliance with statute and best practice.
1.4. Support the development of a multi-skilled approach to the provision of mechanical/electrical services.
1.5. To undertake "Competent Person" duties for Mechanical and water systems as defined in HTM's.
