Role summary
This is a rare opportunity for a fully qualified BSE accredited cardiac physiologist to join the cardio-respiratory investigations unit at Tameside General Hospital. The role primarily involves independently performing and interpreting transthoracic echocardiography for both in-patients and out-patients. The successful candidate will also support the cardiology team with other echo modalities, assist with training, and contribute to departmental development. Experience in myocardial perfusion scans and holter monitor analysis is advantageous.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver a high quality Transthoracic Echo service by performing routine and advanced cardiac ultrasound examinations and formulating a full clinical report.
- Provide comprehensive Echo reports to BSE standards for Transthoracic Echo based on findings and clinical history.
- Work towards and then maintain BSE departmental accreditation.
- Perform the technical role in TOE, optimising images of cardiac anatomy and ensuring proper decontamination procedures for the TOE probe.
- Perform/assist in stress echocardiography to obtain high quality images.
- Perform echocardiography in acute/urgent settings, adapting studies based on initial findings and patient condition.
Essential criteria
- Cardiac Physiology Degree or Equivalent or other equivalent professional academic qualifications
- Full British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) adult accreditation
- Demonstrable postregistration experience with evidence of continuing professional development
- Experience of assisting with TOE, contrast and stress echocardiography
- Experience of autonomous working
- Experience of training others in echocardiography to BSE standards
- Highly developed specialist practical and theoretical echocardiography knowledge and skills
- Demonstrable knowledge of cardiac anatomy, function and dysfunction in relation to echocardiography
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Highly developed practical and analytical skills
- IT competent with good keyboard skills
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex and sensitive information
- Ability to work autonomously
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- High degree of organisational skill
Desirable criteria
- Completion of MSc Scientist Training Programme (STP), BSc Clinical Physiology, ONC/BTEC MPPM, or voluntary registration with AHCS
- ILS/ALS
- BSE accredited or nearing completion of echocardiography accreditation
- Experience of assisting with myocardial perfusion studies
- Experience of other cardiac diagnostics such as 12-lead ECG and ambulatory ECG monitoring analysis

The cardio-respiratory investigations (CRI) unit within Tameside General Hospital provides a range of diagnostic services to the Tameside and Glossop areas. A rare opportunity has arisen for a fully qualified BSE accredited cardiac physiologist to join our existing team. The successful candidate will primarily perform and interpret transthoracic echocardiography independently, including both in-patient and outpatient studies. The physiologist will also support the cardiology team with other echo modalities and assist with training and departmental development. Experience of assisting in myocardial perfusion scan (MPS) would also be a distinct advantage as would experience of holter monitor analysis.
