Role summary
This role is for a motivated and reliable Band 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) in the LCL Central Specimen Reception. You will be part of a team, participating in 24/7 shift work across all LCL sites. The primary duties involve receiving, sorting, and distributing patient samples, inputting demographics into the Laboratory Information System, and liaising with other departments. Previous laboratory and Specimen Reception experience is essential for this position.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain a high standard of multidisciplinary work when carrying out laboratory procedures.
- Receive, sort and distribute samples to relevant laboratories departments using manual, semi-automated and automated techniques and equipment.
- Input of patient demographics onto Laboratory Information System, including blood sciences, virology, immunology and microbiology samples.
- Liaise with other laboratory departments to problem solve and process samples in a timely manner.
- Coordinate and provide training for new MLA staff and ensure all relevant departmental training logs are completed.
- Maintain analytical equipment in optimal operational condition and adhere to all H&S, COSHH, and Laboratory protocols.
Essential criteria
- Numerate and Literate to GCSE level (To include English and Mathematics)
- Demonstrably Computer literate, with demonstrable data entry experience
- Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality and data protection issues
- Knowledge and interest in biomedical science.
- Understands the role of medical laboratories and quality systems.
- Awareness of Health and Safety issues
- Ability to communicate courteously verbally and in writing. Work as part of a team or on own initiative. Work in an organised, time efficient and methodical manner.
- Familiar with use of basic laboratory equipment e.g., pipette, pH meter, centrifuge etc. Scientifically numerate
- Attention to detail
- Willingness to learn and conform to departmental policies, procedures and take defined instruction from others.
- Ability to adapt to requirements of departmental needs with respect to working time.
- Commitment to Dignity and Respect
- Working relationships - maintain and develop
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Biomedical tests
- Knowledge of medical terminologies
- Must maintain a continuous development portfolio.
- Experience of working in a clinical laboratory or equivalent
