Role summary
This role is for a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist Training Lead in Blood Transfusion, open only to current Kent and Medway Pathology Network staff. The successful applicant will perform advanced clinical activities, provide specialised advice, and lead a team of Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Science Support Workers. Key responsibilities include managing training, registration portfolios, and supporting higher specialist qualifications. The post holder will also have shared operational management of the department and assist with routine work and staff rotas.
Key responsibilities
- Manage a high quality Blood Transfusion training program for all staff.
- Have managerial responsibility for Biomedical Scientists and accountability for training delivery.
- Perform a range of advanced healthcare science clinical activities and provide highly specialised advice within Blood Transfusion.
- Lead a team of Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Science Support Workers for your work area and provide training.
- Have shared operational management of the department and assist in managing routine work and staff rotas.
- Prioritise samples, perform tests, authorise results, and maintain blood component stock.
Essential criteria
- MSc in Haematology/Blood Transfusion or equivalent experience
- State registered with the Health & Care Professions Council.
- Evidence of CPD
- Detailed knowledge of theory and analytical techniques in Blood Transfusion
- Knowledge of current trends in Blood Transfusion and the requirements of ISO 15189 :2012/2022 and MHRA.
- Knowledge of current BSH guidelines
- Experience in all areas of clinical Blood Transfusion.
- Experience of organising groups of Staff.
Desirable criteria
- Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
- Specialised knowledge of techniques used in Blood Transfusion analyses.
- Knowledge and understanding of manual techniques used in blood transfusion.
- Knowledge of the development of Pathology Networks.
- Knowledge and previous management of the requirements of specialist portfolios, certificates of achievements and related training documentation.
- Experience of more complicated techniques used in Blood Transfusion.
- Experience in staff appraisal/PDR
- Previous training Lead role

We are looking to recruit a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist Training Lead in Blood Transfusion.
The successful applicant will be required to perform a range of advanced healthcare science clinical activities and provides highly specialised advice within Blood Transfusion.You will lead a team of Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Science Support Workers for your own work area and provide training.
Our Blood Transfusion laboratory utilises Quidel Ortho Vision analysers and a paper-based traceability system.
This post also holds additional responsibility as a Training Lead for the Department. Travel between either site may be required with a primary base of Darent Valley Hospital.
