Role summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse to join St John's Hospice as a Ward Manager. You will provide professional, managerial, and robust clinical leadership to a specified ward area, ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate care. The role involves leading a committed nursing team, influencing patient experience, developing staff, and shaping the future of hospice care. You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, fostering a positive culture of learning and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide professional, managerial and robust clinical leadership to a specified ward area.
  • Promote and assure robust risk assessment and management processes.
  • Manage within the constraints of the identified budget as directed by the Service Manager.
  • Actively support and participate in the integration of a whole system approach with multidisciplinary working.
  • Perform delegated duties on behalf of the Service Manager in their absence.
  • Ensure everyone, including staff, patients and visitors, has their right to be treated with respect and have their values and beliefs maintained.

Essential criteria

  • NMC Registered Nurse (Adult)
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Relevant Postgraduate qualification in a subject relevant to the area of practice
  • Key skills in literacy, numeracy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)
  • Post-registration experience of palliative and end of life care
  • Experience of working in an inpatient ward area
  • Working collaboratively with Patients and their families/carers
  • Providing Management supervision.
  • Developing practice standards
  • Quality improvement activities
  • Leadership or management experience at minimum of a Band 6 role
  • Staff management experience
  • Clinical knowledge to degree level - or equivalent in own area of specialist practice
  • Extensive knowledge of current issues relating to health needs of patients within Palliative care
  • Previous Management experience
  • Principles of change management
  • Principles of project management the field of practice, regionally and nationally
  • Working knowledge of the legal framework and statutory obligations under the Mental Capacity Act.
  • Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice
  • Clinical Governance and its application in practice.
  • Understanding and keeping up to date with research in specific area of expertise
  • The Trust's Quality
  • Improvement system (QIS) - within agreed timescale
  • Good knowledge of record keeping principles
  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
