Role summary
This role is for an innovative Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join a dynamic Neurodevelopmental (ND) Team in Birmingham. The successful candidate will assess, evaluate, and support children with social communication difficulties and profound multiple difficulties within a multidisciplinary team. The position involves managing a diverse caseload across various settings, including child development centres, education settings, and family homes, with some virtual assessments. You will also provide support and supervision to more junior team members and students.
Key responsibilities
- Identify and plan appropriate SLT intervention, including assessment and delivering therapy in groups and one-to-one sessions.
- Provide appropriate treatment and evaluate outcomes for a full range of clients, including complex cases.
- Use highly developed communication skills to explain complex information to clients, carers, and multidisciplinary team members.
- Assess, diagnose, and treat children with communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties, making independent clinical decisions.
- Record and maintain up-to-date clinical case notes in line with professional standards and Trust policies.
- Share specialist knowledge with colleagues at a local level and contribute to evaluating and updating packages of care.
Essential criteria
- A First degree level qualification plus post graduate qualification relevant in SLT
- HCPC Licence to practice
- Full Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
- Evidence of recent relevant CPD activities in specialist area, e.g. ASD , dysphagia, fluency, SLI
- Significant experience as a qualified therapist of diagnostic assessment in any one of the following areas: ASD, dysphagia, fluency or SLI as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of working as a qualified therapist in a range of pre-school multi-disciplinary settings
- Significant experience of delivering clinical support and supervision to less experienced Speech and Language Therapists and/or SLT assistants
- Significant experience as a qualified therapist of managing a mixed and complexcaseload across a number of settings including Early years settings and clients' homes
- Demonstrates high awareness of safeguarding issues and processes
- Significant experience as a qualified therapist of successful multi-agency working with families and stakeholders in Local Authority and Health settings.
- Specialist management of a diverse caseload, as a qualified therapist, having provided support to other professionals.
- Significant experience of using augmentative communication e.g. Makaton signing, symbols, communication aids.
- Experience of delivering successful/effective training to other professionals.
- Able to use evidence base to inform clinical decision-making around complex presentations in specialist clinical area
- Able to work with a range of families in a culturally and socially diverse area
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Able to explain complex ideas in a simple way. Able to write clear reports and notes to a professional standard.
- Able to use signing and communication aids where appropriate.
- IT literate and able to use a range of specialist programmes e.g. Communicate in Print.
- Is able to deliver a number of contacts across the working week across a range of settings
- Is able and willing to move around the city.
- Is able to carry a variety of equipment between locations safely.
- Is able to work at various heights and locations according to needs of clients
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate qualification in paediatric dysphagia
- Trained in ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)
- Trained in NAS EarlyBird
- Trained in PECS
- Able to develop specialist programmes of care & explain them to carers and staff.
